I'm a big fan of Stephen King's On Writing. You get a bit of autobiography along with all sorts of helpful writing information. (warning: coarse language. If you read Stephen King fiction, you're prepared.)

I also liked Escaping into the Open by Elizabeth Berg. In particular, she has a section of writing exercises that proved entertaining.

These are great tips, Angela!

How can I help but suggest the master of the craft: Robert McKee. I had to study that guy's book for three straight years, but it was so worth it.

I'll also put in my own little punch for learning the craft. Thomas Edison said that inventing involves 1 percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration. The same is true of writing. If you don't know the craft, you're always going to be 99 percent short.

IMO,the most important point that Angela makes is both underlying and implied. I will state it openly. Learn the craft by reading about the craft. Notice the number of craft of writing books Angela cites? There is a tendency, particularly among those who aspire to write lit fic or those who study creative writing at universities, to disparage the notion of craft, to think of it as formula. Resist this notion.
For a long time, I didn't read any craft books. After all, I had a good "feel" for language. But I didn't publish either. A few craft books later, things began to change and I began getting acceptance letters.

Angela mentions some great titles. I'd love to hear what craft books some other writers have read that have been helpful to them

Thanks. I thought I had that writing bug out of my system. Oh; I don’t know how to write in sarcasm. :) Thanks
