Were we on the same program once at a UVU AML meeting? I was so impressed with your work! Thank you for going into the nuts and bolts like a pro-scientist. I am one of those "others" who chugs along by the seat of the pants. I can't even begin to find the structure of my new novel FIRES OF JERUSALEM. (I just followed the Old Testament.) The book is coming out at last! And maybe someone else can analyze! (I'm in the process of doing a TRAILER, throwing the baby into the fire! So watch for it, okay?) Cheers! Marilyn Brown

P.S. I haven't had time to talk to anyone in AML (or a Red Brick Store) for years, but my publisher has asked me to make a noise now and then to let people know something is happening at last! (After six years I might have a book!)

The dramatic need in Avatar seems conspicuous by its absence. But his decision seems also to be the moral of our time. Perhaps the producers of the movie also support plastic surgery clinics?

I guess the movie did portray humanity realistically, at least a part of it.

Anyhow, it looks as if you've done your homework for being a writer. Many wannabe writers have, I'm sure. They've analyzed the canon, and figured the same things pretty much drive all Great stories. But it also takes a gripping style. If you're writing a book, you need to keep your audiences motivated to read by not making your sentences and vocab too complicated; if you're writing a movie script, you need gripping dialogue. Etc.

In analysis, many ho-hum books are built with proper plans, but the finishing isn't good, and they end up looking unalluring to the audience. How does the connoisseur audience find the books they get excited about? I don't know.

I've read many a sleep-inducing tone concerning how to write, but I seem to lack the tenacity to learn to use language right consistently. I know grammar, I can analyze a sentence, even a paragraph etc. What's good language really about?

You make an excellent point. Jake's decision would have been much more dramatic if he had gone over to creatures who look like mud and had been leaving a supermodel behind. Instead he has absolutely no reason not to abandon his old life and every advantage in moving forward which is why the people he left are probably right in concluding he went native rather than made a moral decision.

Extremely helpful, as always. I just went into my novel raw fodder document and tried to come with goals vs. dramatic needs for my main character, and I got some ideas. Thanks, McK--er, Carter!

Nicely done. Every so often I get the urge to "become a writer", but, as an article about writing that I read a few days ago stated, you're either driven to write, or you're not. If you're not, you're not a writer, and you never will be a writer. I found it very hard to argue with the stance the author of that article took. So, as one of those unfortunate human beings who finds satisfaction not so much in the actual creation process as I do in simply gaining a superficial understanding of the creation process, thanks for this one.
