Irreantum’s Coming to a Mailbox Near You!

It’s almost time for the newest issue of Irreantum to hit the streets. Thwack! Just like that. On the streets! It’s the first issue I’ve officially edited, and I (very humbly) think it’s pretty darn good. This double issue, chock full of over 250 pages of great fiction and poetry and essays and reviews, is one you should own. If you aren’t an Irreantum subscriber or a member of the AML (an Irreantum subscription is included in your AML membership), you can buy the journal for $10. Head over here and electronically plunk down your ten spot. It’ll be worth it, I promise.

If my unabashed begging and bragging hasn’t enticed you, perhaps the table of contents will:

Fiction

Jack Harrell: “Calling and Election”
Wayne Jorgensen: “This Afternoon”
Darin Cozzens: “Reap in Mercy”
Arianne Cope: “Salt Water”
William Morris: “Speculations: Trees”
Kristin Carson: “Gypsy Holiday”
Mark Brown: “Cause”

Critical Essays

Elizabeth Busby: “Going Mainstream: Chaim Potok as a Model for Mormon Literature”
Kylie Nielson Turley: “Wrestling with LDS Motherhood: Josephine Spencer’s Feminist Evolution”

Darlene Young: Postpartum; How Long
Nani Lii Furse: To Anne Katrine, Ancestor

Doug Gibson: “Hedges and Edges in a Genre-Based Market: Christopher Bigelow’s Kindred Spirits and Eugene Woodbury’s The Path of Dreams
David G. Pace: “Coffee with Levi Peterson: Levi Peterson’s A Rascal by Nature, a Christian by Yearning
Lynn Pederson: “A Balance of the Large and Small: Lance Larsen’s In All Their Animal Brilliance

Art by Maralise Petersen

This issue excites me for lots of reasons. There’s the beautiful, provocative, insightful fiction by some of our very best LDS writers, including Bruce (aka Wayne) Jorgensen, Darin Cozzens, and Jack Harrell. There’s Elizabeth Busby’s incisive essay about Mormon artists’ particular affinity for Chaim Potok, and Kylie Nelson Turley’s exploration of an obscure (and stunning) feminist short story by Josephine Spencer. The story, “Little Mother,” has been reprinted in our “From the Archives” section, and I’m honored that Irreantum is publishing what I believe to be important, but largely forgotten, example of early Mormon literature. Add to this a bunch of great poetry and personal essays and reviews, some beautiful photography by Maralise Peterson, and what do you have? An issue you’ll want to have in your personal library.

Hope you like it.

    William Morris:

I can’t wait to get my hands on it. And not just because I’m in it (as is my fellow AMVer Tyler Chadwick) — I’m looking forward to 5 new short stories to sink my teeth in to.

As promised in my bio that will appear in the issue, I have posted liner notes for “Speculations: Trees”.

Stephen, if only I could get all AMLers to buy extra memberships for their spouses! And Kathy, I can’t get you a discount, but I will babysit for you in a pinch :-) .

William, those liner notes are fascinating. Your story is so interesting and different–I’m very pleased to have it in this issue–and it’s in good company with not five but six other pieces of really strong fiction. I’m very enthusiastic about some of the short stories I see being produced in the Mormon literary community and want to establish Irreantum as a home for the best of the best.
