My House is a Mess

This post is written by Lisa Torcasso-Downing, the fiction editor of Irreantum, a fantastic writer and critic, and one who provides direct service through her literary efforts to many other human beings, one of them being me. Seriously, I don’t know what I’d do without her on Irreantum’s staff. And can I say, after reading [...]

Some things I like about being an editor

1. I like working in my pajamas. At 7:35 a.m., my family goes off to school and I settle down in my office, check what the Amazon MP3 special of the day is, catch up on Facebook, and then get into my tasks for the day. And often, I don’t really get up for any [...]

Kathy Soper’s memoir has arrived!

Did you know that the RBS’s very own Kathy Soper, editor of Segullah, wrote a book? A memoir, to be specific, called The Year My Son and I Were Born. It’s the honest, compelling, beautifully-told story of the year after her seventh child, Thomas, was born with Down syndrome. It’s a truly fantastic book.

AML Conference! Terryl Givens! Did we mention it’s free??

The Association for Mormon Letters’ Annual Meeting is coming up soon. Here’s the official announcement: The AML Annual Meeting will be held on Saturday, February 28th at the library at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. We’re tremendously excited to announce that the keynote speaker for the AML Annual Meeting will be Terryl L. Givens. [...]

BYU : The Ensign :: Southern Virginia University : ________ ?

by Shelah Miner If you came into my house and started rifling through the closets and drawers, you’d quickly discern our family’s academic allegiance– we’re Cougars through and through. I was an English major in the early and mid-nineties, when there wasn’t much job security for BYU English professors. But I’m not embarrassed to say [...]

The Short Story

I’ve been up to my metaphorical armpits in short stories lately. I’m editing an LDS short fiction anthology for Zarahamla Books and as a result I’ve been reading back issues of all the RBS magazines (of course) as well as Googling relatively obscure Mormon authors and emailing relatively famous ones. It’s been fun. Sure, I’ve [...]

Why we write

By Heather O., Segullah Editorial Board Member Last time I was here, I told you about my father-in-law and his obsession with books.  Now I’ll tell you about my husband, and his obsession with writing. In some ways, it’s the reason we are together.  We are both always writing.  We got to know each other [...]

Creative Theology?

So, what’s more fraught with cognitive dissonance than being a feminist, slightly left-leaning Mormon in Sacrament Meeting? Being a FSL-LM who is also an effete snob in an “open and affirming” Congregational worship service!

Becoming Hong Mei’s Mother

By Joanna Briscoe An earlier version of this essay was posted on the LDS group blog Feminist Mormon Housewives, 23 August 2007. The Chinese have a saying: “An invisible red thread connects those who are destined to meet, regardless of time, place, or circumstance. The thread may stretch or tangle, but it will never break.” [...]
